The National Retail Federation has some great news for U.S. retailers ahead of Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 8 this year. Here at Trellus, which exclusively serves Long Island’s local businesses with same-day delivery, we’ve read NRF’s annual consumer survey for the holiday, and we want to share some key findings. According to the NRF’s projections, Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach a record high of $31.7 billion this year, up $3.6 billion from the previous 2021 record. Beyond dinner and brunch outings, jewelry purchases are driving this year’s spending increases. The category is expected to reach a record high.
Among the key findings:
- 41% of consumers are planning to gift jewelry this year, up from 34% in 2021.
- Total spending on jewelry is expected to reach $7 billion.
Notably, finding unique gifts is a top priority for Mother’s Day shoppers. Forty-six percent want to find a gift that’s unique or different, or find a gift that creates a special memory (41%).
The quest for a unique gift will lead many shoppers online. More than a third, 36%, are planning to to make their Mother’s Day purchases online. Notably, online shopping topped department stores (30%), specialty stores (27%), and local small businesses (23%).
Additionally, we can’t forget our ‘tried-and-true’ gift categories. This year:
- 75% of shoppers plan to buy greeting cards.
- 72% plan to buy traditional Mother’s Day bouquets.
Notably, 39% of consumers surveyed are interested in gifting product subscription services, “extending the gift-giving experience beyond Mother’s Day,” NRF summarizes.
